A Guarda’s Cultural Center is one of the most emblematic buildings in our town. Located in an Indian style building, it was built as an Asylum House Hospital at the beginning of the 20th century, to remedy the fault of sanitary infrastructures. Funded by a group of people from A Guarda who emigrated to America, it was inaugurated in 1921 under a project by the architect Tomás Bilbao Serrucha. Later it is transferred to Provincial Health, becoming secondary center of rural hygiene. In 1990, reforms were carried out to locate in the building or socio-cultural center, where today we can find the main cultural facilities of the town:
With a capacity of 183 locations, the Events Room is the scene of the main cultural events in A Guarda, various festivals, theater and cinema share screenings throughout the year.
In addition to the programming organized by the Ministry of Culture, the Events Room is available to associations and groups to carry out their public acts. The groups that wish to do so must request their use before the Department of Culture of the Council of Guarda, taking into account the following considerations:
In the grounf floor of the Cultural Center there is also the Exhibition Room, which is divided into 3 different rooms: ROOM I (or small room), CHAPEL and ROOM II (or large room). This room is available for use by collectives and associations, as well as for artists interested in showing their work.
In this space, which corresponds to the chapel of the old sanatorium, the civil matriomony ceremonies are held.
The Cultural Center houses the facilities of the municipal library. More information in its section. [Library]
The first floor is the CEMIT Classroom for new technologies. More information in its section. [CEMIT classroom]
